Sleeping Breathless

Sleep apnea (apnea is a Latin word meaning “without breath”) is a serious disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops long enough during sleep to decrease the amount of oxygen and increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood and brain. In sleep apnea, breathing stops or becomes very shallow for periods of 10 to 20 seconds or longer many times during the night. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airway obstruction that occur during sleep, usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation.

The most common signs of sleep apnea are loud snoring and choking or gasping during sleep and being sleepy during the day.

Having a physical exam and providing your doctor with information about your sleep will help to diagnose sleep apnea. Your doctor may also want you to have special sleep tests. A sleep test, called polysomnography is usually done to diagnose sleep apnea. There are two kinds of polysomnograms. An overnight polysomnography test involves monitoring brain waves, muscle tension, eye movement, respiration, oxygen level in the blood and audio monitoring. (for snoring, gasping, etc.) The second kind of polysomnography test is a home monitoring test. A Sleep Technologist hooks you up to all the electrodes and instructs you on how to record your sleep with a computerized polysomnograph that you take home and return in the morning.

Treatment is aimed at restoring regular nighttime breathing and relieving symptoms such as loud snoring and daytime sleepiness. Treatment will also help associated medical problems, such as high blood pressure, and reduce the risk for heart attack and stroke. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the most common treatment for sleep apnea. CPAP is a machine that blows air into your nose via a nose mask, keeping the airway open and unobstructed.

Desperate Housewives Apologized

Recently there is an issue with regard to the scene on one of the episode of desperate housewives that had insulted Filipino Professional Doctors. By this scene it had putted a black marked on the Filipino doctors. Thou we all know that this is just a show. But there are many people watching the show. And it could be an insult to all the Filipino people.

After the episode was launched many had protested to the matter and wanted an apology for the damage done.

Today the ABC had wrote a statement apologizing to what the show had brought. But then many claimed that the apology was sour and wasn’t meant. Well what more could it be that they want. The damaged has been done. And many had already had putted that on their minds what Filipino Doctors are.

But I think blaming Teri Hatcher seems inappropriate also because she is just following what the director and writers putted on the script. And who’s to blame if she is fired from work because she didn’t followed what was written on the script. Would you be responsible for expenses she will be spending if she is fired? So quit blaming Teri. And just blame the production staffs; writer, director of the show and ABC.

Tell you what; to all Filipinos you don’t need to ask from them any more than a mere apology. Because that wouldn’t change anything at all. Because as what I’ve said the damaged has been done. So here were you will stand now Filipino Doctors. It all lies on your hands to stand up and show the entire world what FILIPINO DOCTORS are. Show them that you had earned your degree and that you know what you are doing. And do it with all your best. Don’t let any show destroy you, your name, your, profession, and most importantly your knowledge. And who knows ‘maybe’ Filipino Doctors, are more BETTER than their doctors.

Health Benefits of COFFEE

Many scientific studies have examined the relationship between coffee consumption and a wide array of medical conditions. Most studies are contradictory as to whether coffee has any specific health benefits, and results are similarly conflicting with respect to negative effects of coffee consumption.

Positive effects of coffee include reducing risks of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, cirrhosis of the liver, and gout.

Negative effects of coffee include drinking caffeinated coffee can cause a temporary increase in the stiffening of arterial walls, excess coffee consumption may lead to a magnesium deficiency or hypomagnesaemia.

Vein Strain

Crossing your legs may be the most popular way of developing varicose veins (those purplish knotted veins found at the skin’s surface, usually behind your calves). Veins become varicose when their valves (Tiny flaps which help bring the blood up to the heart) malfunction. When this happens, gravity takes its course and the blood fails to get pushed up. “Your blood is somewhat trapped and remains stagnant, thus distending the veins,” says Dr. Valerie F. Gosiengfiao-de Vera (chief resident of dermatology, University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital). Here are ways to improve your blood circulation:

  1. WORK OUT. Physical activity helps the blood in your legs to flow, so get a move on.
  2. CHOOSE YOUR SHOES. Avoid high heels when you can. Low-heeled shoes don’t strain your calf muscles as much, which is better for your veins.
  3. TAKE A BREAK. Be mindful. If you’ve been standing too long, sit down. Or vice versa.
  4. LOSE WEIGHT. Being overweight puts pressure on your legs, causing a strain on circulation.
  5. UNCROSS YOUR LEGS to avoid distended veins. This relieves pressure in your legs.

Your Guardian Angel

I really like to listen to this song by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus entitled “Your Guardian Angel”. It makes me sway to the flow of the song. This song rocks!
